Forget time management strategies for a second. Did you ever sit down to respond to an email and come to realize that, when you pick your head up for air, it is practically three hours later? Did you ever start your day wasting time on Facebook and then, all of a sudden, realize it's lunch time?
Then congratulations!!!
You've made it in the 21st century! But how does the busy dad/executive/mortgage broker/network marketer/business owner get it all done? Well, there are certain time management strategies that are available to you. Yes, life and balancing your calendar are like football and chess - you need a plan.
Three of my Favorite Time Management Strategies?
1) One of my best time management strategies is to "compartmentalize" your day. That means that if you have phone time, don't check email. If you are responding to email, then don't check Facebook. If you are working on your internet marketing strategies, then don't answer the phone. In doing this, you allow yourself to focus on the task at hand. Don't text and drive, and don't respond to email when you are on the phone. How long does it take to stop calling, put down the phone, read, respond, and delete a few emails, then go back to the phone and wait for an email response? It's not the most efficient use of your brain or your time because of all the switching, or changing gears your brain has to do. You can't get it all done and you certainly can't get it all done today. But if you learn some time management strategies, then you can certainly be more efficient.
2) Another favorite is to write down, before you go to sleep at night, the 6 most important things that must get done the next day. That's right - 6. When you do that, you allow your subconscious to work for you as you sleep. As you drift off to bed, your subconscious will think about the most efficient and effective ways to get your 6 tasks done. When I do this, I sleep soundly and am ready to start my day the next morning. My feet hit the ground running! When I don't do this, I tend to go to my desk, sit there a little while, and mess around on email and Facebook for who-knows-how-long, before I figure out exactly what I am supposed to do for the day. Not very smart.
3) Finally, schedule your interruptions. How many "gotta minute?" interruptions do you have on a daily basis? Every time your phone rings, it's an interruption. Every time your spouse or child comes into your office, it's an interruption. And if you still have one of those "J-O-B's", then you probably have a ton of "gotta minute?" meetings and interruptions. Well, you "gotta" schedule them. These are not time management easy-to-implement solutions. These are time management strategies - it's a constant study.
A Personal Perspective on Time Management Strategies
Am I an expert at this stuff? No way! But I am a student of this. I continuously work on controlling my calendar and not have it control me. It is a constant battle between family/business/incoming calls/out going calls/email in and email out/time prospecting and time training. But I work by a weekly calendar and I have the ability to see daily and monthly.
In my business - network marketing - I constantly hear from the field (prospects and teammates) that "I have no time". Well, how will things be different in a couple of months or a couple of years from now? You have to make time for the important things.
